Just read the bulletpoint ramblings and I have to agree, it definitely has its merits. Those merits in no particular order are:
Art style - the game is beautiful. Between the vivid colors and colorbook story land environments, it's eye candy at its finest...errr..sweetest.
Characters - Prince has been around awhile (hell, I think it was my first real PC game I was able to get my hands on for an extended amount of time at summer camp). But his character and sarcastic banter between him and Elika never got old. Very well done.
And the effect of healing the land I think was a first, which was really neat to see done in real-time.
Ok, the negative stuff. I have to agree, the light seeds drove me nuts. And as nuts as it sounds, I'm almost tempted to go back and get the rest of them now that I've beaten it. I said almost. Unlike ManicApollo, I'm an achievement nutcase. (Let's see how many more times I can use the word "nut" in this paragraph.) But I said almost, I don't think I'm going to do it (simply because it's not worth points versus the time it's going to take.) Nuts.
Repetitiveness - the team tried to mix it up as much as possible, you can definitely tell. But unfortunately, the formula of going to corrupted land, fight bad guy, heal land, and then repeat again and again. Sadly, it was just the way it was. Don't get me wrong though, the game can throw you a little curveball here and there which is nice.
Ok, good game. Short and sweet. Probably not going to get the DLC, but this game's ending was a little different, which I appreciated to.
Now, do I play Ninja Gaiden 2 or Quantum of Solace? Hmm... I think I want to shoot things. See ya!
And, after just beating the game, I have to say the ending is one of the better endings in recent videogame memory. Contrast this ending, with, say, Fallout 3, and there's a definite contrast.
As of today, I'm looking forward to Mass Effect 2. :D
So far, Uncharted is a must have. While nothing special action-wise, it seems to do everything just right. Uncharted 2's coming up and looks like it'll kick some ass.
Played some MGS4 and while it's pretty, it's been a so-so experience. I was never a real fan of the other MGS's (though I was a Metal Gear NES fan). Killzone 2's been fun, though I haven't really gotten into it too much just yet, a few maps in single-player and no online coop yet.
Well, add Resident Evil 5 to the list of "Greatest Games, Worst Endings"... After playing through it over Xbox Live co-op the past week, the game was fucking amazing but the ending was awful. I don't know if they just ran out of storage capacity to build in a full-length CGI ending or what, but after all that action and storyline, you'd have thought that there would have been a more substantial ending.
At least the action at the end made you feel like you accomplished something. We played through on Veteran the first time through which made it tough but not overwhelming. Freakin ending though... ugh.
How about cut scenes? They're a pivotal part of streamlining a story into the action, and without them I don't think video games would ever been able to rival Hollywood in the storytelling department.
I think Ms. Pac-Man was the first game to incorporate cut scenes... now they're like a requirement of every game.
Not exactly earth shattering stuff... umm, the ability to save games? Yeeees, that's a good thing, but playing games worth saving your progress for... now that's something.
Yeh youre right about the snipers, thanks for putting me straight. totally agree with all points just mentioned, as for your other point ref interactive enviroments, i think Operation flashpoint 2 will be setting the new benchmark for environment interaction. so hopefully modern warfare 2 will follow suit. :D
You're absolutely right about the snipers, though I think if snipers stay in scope view the killcam only shows the scoped view, which is difficult to discern the sniper's location from.
One of the reasons I actually LIKE the KillCam for all types of kills is because it lets you know if someone is glitching/cheating a map. Especially when a game is first released, it seems like the cheaters are way ahead of the glitch curve than the gamers that play fairly, so it's nice to see if the kills are glitch kills (glitching under or over a map, very popular in the early days of World at War, is a perfect example of this).
One other improvement I'd love to see is actual environment interactions - like if I run into a barrel, it falls over. If a barrel fell over and I run into it, it starts rolling. That sort of thing. Not sure if current gen has the horsepower to handle that physics on top of everything else, but it would go a long way in making the game more realistic. But I really hate that when I run into an object that should actually move, I come to a complete stop as if I ran into a brick wall.
Thanks for the welcome ManicApollo :D The point system in Americas Army realy goes a long way to making the game more realistic. I also think that the snipers should get a ghilly suit and that kills receieved from the sniper should not be shown on the lookback function :)
Hey Norvek, thanks for reading and signing up! Great to have you aboard!
I myself have never tried America's Army, but that system sounds promising... Even a +10/-5 ratio would work for me. But a +10/-0 just doesn't make any sense, at least IMO.
Cheats are the worst... especially those that exploit map glitches (I only play COD on my 360)... L) ~X( Luckily, Infinity Ward/Treyarch get patches out relatively quickly, so it wasn't necessary to put as #10 on my list. :)
Hi all,
just read Manic Apollo's comments on 9 ways to improve Call of Duty games. He has some great ideas =D> , ref no. 9 the points system. I reckon they should follow the pc's Americas Army game where you get 10 points for a kill but you get 10 deducted if you die. I also think they should employ a punkbuster to foil all those pesky cheats :D .
I wonder if he's using the World Tour drums, or Rock Band. I can imagine that if it were the World Tour ones, with the option of an added bass pedal....it would be nigh- IMPOSSIBLE on Expert mode!
This is so right up my alley. I was once a WoW geek. I played night and day and even bought a second computer for the wife so she could play too. we then figured out we were wasting our lives away after hitting level 40. If we truly had the time I am sure that we would still be playing. But doing other things became more important. I guess I will have to wait till my son is 12 before I start playing WoW X .
I would like to make a recommendation to send this article to Mr Baskin and see if he responds.
I have to agree with everything you've said in this article. Being a gamer for 25 years now, I will forever stand by my claim that video games actually made me LESS aggressive during my upbringing. It's called a "release" or an "outlet." Some people listen to music, some yell profanities into a pillow, some take drugs. I played video games and still do.
Ok, the only reason why I OWN a PS3 is because of Blu-ray. I've played so few games on the PS3, it's actually kind of unnerving that I bought the $500 bundle (the MGS4 bundle) to begin with. So basically, I bought a $500 blu-ray player (well hey, not that's forget tax.) I'm not pissed yet, but if PS3 does something stupid like this and then starts having developers make games on super compressed DVD's which then this new blu-ray less system is the new lowest common denominator I'm going to scream. If Sony wants to make money, get the system into the hands of gamers by losing money on the system and recoup it on its games and royalities from Blu-ray movies. It's a razor and razorblade business, and they need to realize this again. Ok, that's my two cents... for now. :-)
I think I've decided that I'm going to pick up SF4 for the XB360, it's just a matter of waiting for the price to come down. I'll be picking up RE5 as well, under the same premises since my primary videogame playing buddy is getting hitched and I don't like playing with random folks online as quality tends to be hit or miss... mostly miss. So I've got time to wait before making these purchases.
But I'll also need to plunk down for the arcade controller for SF4. Nice expensive purchase there for a single game, doh.
I finally beat FO3 a week or so ago, I sunk about 50 hours in which may be a record for me with an RPG and I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in gameplaying in awhile (though I felt a bit cheated by the ending, which I ranted in a different thread). I actually went back to my save game prior to the ending sequence and explored around the landscape some, completing side quests for achievements just for the hell of it. Such a good game, though I don't think I'll be plunking any $$ down for the DLC.
Currently playing Prince of Persia XB360, which I'm going to do a writeup on. So far a pretty fun (and beautifully illustrated) experience.
i really like SF4, they have to improve the online matchmaking functions though. I bought SF4 for the ps3 because I couldnt even think about tolerating it playing it with the 360 controller, the PS3 one is much better, less people to play with online though.
aS FOR fo3M I think I beat it in under 15 hours, I went a odd route, heavy on firearms, speech and lockpick I believe, its been over a month, so I domt remember everything.
Ive been playing colonization and civ4, more of a TBS guy, but the new star craft and total war game are very interesting. Time will tell, starcraft is quite a big name to live up to
So how long would you say it took you to beat FO3? And what route did you take? I've gone the full altruistic path, heavy on speech, science, and medicine skills. So conversations are a lot of fun since I can pretty much manipulate anyone into giving me information. But I get SOOOOOOOO bogged down on side missions. I'm about 12 hours in and just got to Three Dog and on my way to Rivet City, but making stops for like 4 other quests before I do. It's gunna take me forever to hammer this one out.
And how is SF4? I've seen it getting rave reviews, but I think I'd have to buy the game and the arcade stick since the XB360 controller really isn't fighter-friendly. I was such a hardcore SF2 player back in the day, but haven't gotten into the 2d brawlers since (the 20 versions of SF2 kinda make me disinterested - but did get back into it with Darkstalkers back in the day for awhile).
I loved GTA 4 - the first GTA I really played and the only one I completed. Loved every minute of it. Actually really enjoyed playing online with buddies and just cruising the landscape blowing each other up or jumping from helicopters. Lost and the Damned apparently is 10+ hours for $20. Think I'll have to hop on that deal.....

What the hell did we do before them?
We need more games like this.

Did you pick it up Eggman?

In any case, someone was kind enough to compress the actual video file and upload it to rapidshare... I've verified it's legit (mp4 format).
Download and enjoy!
Great Article

I guess we'll find out how your dexterity is ... baby in one hand, mad mouse-clicking with the other.
Or better yet, get your kid to learn hotkeys... you'll be a pro at SC2 in no time, better the 4 sets of hands. :O)
hahaha what was the bet?
I'm pretty sure XB360's been outselling the PS3 in the US for quite some time... it's only recently it's surpassed in Japan.
Which is amazing because the Japanese hate Microsoft. I guess that's what a JRPG does for a console.
